Why I Love the HyperGrinder i-4 Wood 230V Variable Speed Planetary Sander

After years of sanding hardwood floors, I’ve used a lot of different equipment. Every machine has its place, but every once in a while you add something to your setup that genuinely changes the way you work.

For me, the HyperGrinder i-4 Wood 230V Variable Speed Planetary Sander has been one of those machines.

A Different Approach to Sanding Hardwood Floors

The i-4 Wood uses a four-head counter-rotating planetary system, which is one of the things that makes this machine stand out.

Instead of fighting the machine across the floor, the i-4 is extremely well balanced and can be worked in virtually any direction. That makes it comfortable to operate while giving you a tremendous amount of control over the sanding process.

But what I really care about is the floor it leaves behind.

The four-head planetary system, combined with the adjustable wheels, is designed to produce an exceptionally flat, consistent surface. When you’re refinishing hardwood floors professionally, that matters.

One Machine That Can Do a Lot

Another reason I’ve become such a fan of the i-4 is its versatility.

This isn’t a machine that only gets pulled out for one specific step of a job. Depending on your setup and attachments, the i-4 Wood can be used for:

• Pre-grinding

• Hardwood floor sanding

• Fine sanding and finishing

• Oiling

• Brushing

• Removing adhesives and resins

• Concrete preparation and grinding

The planetary system can also be removed to accommodate different pad holders, brushes and single-disc accessories.

For a professional flooring contractor, having equipment that can perform multiple jobs is a huge advantage.

The Variable Speed Makes a Difference

I use the 230V variable-speed version of the i-4 Wood.

Being able to adjust the machine rather than having one fixed operating speed gives you more control for different stages of the sanding and finishing process. You’re not necessarily looking for the same amount of aggression on every floor or during every step of a project.

That’s one of the things I appreciate about this particular version of the machine — it gives me options.

Built With the Flooring Contractor in Mind

There are also a lot of smaller design details that become important when you’re actually moving equipment from job to job.

The i-4 Wood is compact, has a relatively small footprint and features a handle that can fold 90 degrees for transportation and storage.

Those might sound like minor things on a specification sheet. When you’re loading and unloading flooring equipment every day, they’re not minor.

Would I Recommend It?

Absolutely.
