Waterborne Floor Finish

March 1, 2018

I strive to keep my work clean and safe when it comes to any task I take on.  Especially when working inside of the home on things like hardwood floors.  This is why I use dust extraction and collection machines with all my sanding equipment.  Not only does it allow for a healthy work environment but it also gives the clients the piece of mind that there whole house won’t be a disaster upon the completion of their wood floor install and finish.

Although I could talk about amazing dust collection and german made tools all day long that isn’t the main idea of this blog.  I want to talk about water-borne floor finishes and how that relates to the first statement about a clean and safe workplace.

Water borne floor finishes are a newer technology and continue to get better every single day.  It used to be when you got your hardwood floors refinished at your house you and your family would have to deal with the awful smell of petroleum based polyurethane for days or in some cases weeks after the work is done.  And sadly even though the smell goes away eventually but,  the TOXIC GASSES do not.  Polyurethane finishes can continue to off gas for years after they are installed posing a potential health risk to you and your family.

With waterborne finishes this concern is completely eliminated.  Many of the products used today like Bona Traffic HD or Loba easy finish are rated at 0 VOCS.  And VOC stands for volatile organic compounds so having 0 of them is a good thing.  Eliminating the VOCs from the install keeps the technician safe and most importantly keeps the homeowners and their children and pets safe for the long life of the floor.

There are a ton of other positives about going with waterborne finishes over traditional polyurethane that I’ll go into greater detail about on a future blog post.  If you have any questions or comments please don’t hesitate to leave them down below.  And if you are in the Dayton, OH area and are interested in getting your hardwood floors refinished or are considering a new install please feel free to call us and set up a consultation to go over your options.  Thanks for taking the time to read.
